Words to Minutes Calculator

Calculators By Kveeky Team Updated 7 min read

A words to minutes calculator tells you how long a script takes to read aloud. At the average US English speaking rate of about 150 words per minute, a 1-minute script is about 150 words, a 30-second ad is about 75 words, and 1,000 words take about 6 minutes 40 seconds. Paste your script below to time it at your own pace.

Estimates. Real timing depends on the voice, pauses and punctuation. Kveeky generates up to 5,000 characters at a time, so longer scripts are made in parts.

Key Takeaways

  • Spoken length = word count ÷ words per minute. At 150 wpm, 150 words take 1 minute.
  • A 15-second spot fits about 35–40 words, a 30-second spot about 75, and a 60-second script about 150.
  • Slow down for phone prompts and training (about 130 wpm). Speed up a little for ads and social clips.
  • Audiobook narrators average about 9,300 words per finished hour, roughly 155 wpm.
  • With an AI voice, you can change speed after writing, so write for the length first, then fine-tune.

How many words fit in each video or ad length?

The 150 wpm average comes from the National Center for Voice and Speech. The 130 and 170 wpm columns are our planning presets for slower and faster delivery, not measured averages.

Which pace should you plan for?

Pick the pace from the job the audio does, not from how fast you read silently.

Plan for: brisk, about 170 wpm, but leave room. A 30-second radio or social spot holds about 75–85 words at that pace. For streaming audio ads, Spotify recommends no more than 65 words for 30 seconds and about 100 words for 60 seconds, which leaves room for music and a clear call to action. Hook in the first 3 seconds and say the brand name early.

Plan for: average, about 150 wpm. A 10-minute video needs about 1,500 words of narration. Explainers usually run slightly slower around key terms, so budget 10% fewer words if you show text or diagrams on screen.

Plan for: slow and clear, about 130 wpm. Learners take notes and read on-screen text at the same time. A 5-minute module holds about 650 words. Split anything longer into short sections that each make one point.

Plan for: slow and clear, about 130 wpm. Callers often write down hours, numbers or options. Keep a main greeting under 30 seconds, which is about 60–65 words. See our phone greeting and IVR script library.

Plan for: about 155 wpm. ACX, Audible’s production marketplace, says most narrators read about 9,300 words per finished hour. A 60,000-word book comes to about 6.5 hours of audio.

How to hit an exact length with an AI voice

  1. Write to the word budget from the table, a few words under the target.
  2. Paste the script into Kveeky and choose a voice that suits the format.
  3. Generate and check the real length in the downloaded MP3 or WAV.
  4. Fine-tune the speed between 0.5× and 2×. Small changes, such as 0.9× or 1.1×, sound natural.
  5. Cut words rather than rushing if you are more than 10% over. Fast reads lose listeners.

Pauses add time too. A full stop, a comma or a new paragraph all change the rhythm. Our guide on pauses, emphasis and pacing shows how to control them.

The formula behind the calculator

Speaking time in minutes = number of words ÷ words per minute.

For example, a 450-word script at 150 wpm takes 450 ÷ 150 = 3 minutes. To find a word budget, reverse it: words = minutes × words per minute. A 45-second slot at 150 wpm holds 0.75 × 150 ≈ 112 words.

When you change AI voice speed, multiply the pace by the speed. At 1.2×, a 150 wpm voice reads about 180 wpm, so the same script is about 17% shorter. This is an estimate, because some voices stretch pauses differently.

Frequently asked questions

How many words is a 1-minute speech?

About 150 words at an average US English speaking rate. A slower, clearer read is about 130 words, and a brisk read is about 170.

How long does it take to read 1,000 words aloud?

About 6 minutes 40 seconds at 150 words per minute. At a slow 130 wpm it takes about 7 minutes 42 seconds.

How many words should a 30-second ad script be?

About 75 words at an average pace. For streaming audio ads with music, Spotify recommends no more than 65 words for 30 seconds.

How do I calculate how long my script will take?

How many words is an hour of audiobook?

ACX says most narrators average about 9,300 words per finished hour, which is roughly 155 words per minute.
